During the plenary session on 7 Nov,
PMI’s Chief Operating Officer, Mark Langley, presented
Walt Lipke with the Eric Jenett Project Management Excellence
Award. The award recognizes an individual who
makes outstanding contributions to the project management
profession through an act that demonstrates leadership
and initiative while advancing project management concepts,
techniques, practices or theories. Only four others
have received this highly prestigious award. |

On the evening of 6 Nov, TCR hosted
a reception for Mr. Lipke in the Capitol View Room of
the Hilton Mark Center in Alexandria, Virginia to honor
his accomplishment and receipt of the Eric Jenett award.
TCR has launched the marketing of a new real-time
project management tool, NOVUS, which incorporates the
Earned Schedule measure and capabilities. The
TCR hosts were Sue Gibson (president), Aaron Fulner,
Karen Dougherty, and Herman DeJong. Among those in attendance
were Walt’s daughters Tara Crowley and Jennifer
McCarty. Outstanding members of the project management
and EVM community came and enjoyed the celebration:
Dave Muzio, Jim Wrisley, Harry Sparrow, John Singley,
Barry Schuler, Dr. Frank Anbari, Ray Stratton, Lew Hecht,
Doug Fisher and Valerie Carter. Likewise several
international leaders of project management and EVM
application were present: Kym Henderson (Australia),
Lauren Bone (Australia), Sven Antvik (Sweden), Steve
Wake (United Kingdom), and Josef Zucha (Slovakia). |

Catalyst, Inc., has completed an extensive paper, “A
Review of the Validity of Current Project Management
Reports and the Identification of Areas Needing Improvement.”
This impressive work along with its synopsis is

A calculator has been added to the es
calculator page, “Statistical Planning Calculator
(Probability & Reserves).” The calculator
utilizes estimates or historical variation from past
projects to assist planning teams for strategizing the
amounts of cost and schedule reserve needed to achieve
a desired probability of success. |

On July 13, at the monthly meeting of
the Oklahoma City Chapter of PMI, Kym Henderson presented
“Earned Schedule in Action.” The presentation
is based upon Mr. Henderson’s article, same title,
published in the June 2005 issue of The
Measurable News. This presentation, which
discusses Critical Path and Earned Schedule methods,
has been accepted by the International Project Management
Conference (IPMC) scheduled for 5-7 November in Alexandria,
VA. |

Together, Walt Lipke and Kym Henderson
taught an all day course on Earned Schedule in Sydney,
Australia on August 20. The class was attended
by 21 students, which included Ian Wolfe the Vice President
of the Sydney Chapter of PMI. |

Walt presented “Using Earned Schedule
to Improve Project Control and Reduce Risk” on
August 23 at the Australian Defence and Industry Conference
held in Adelaide. Later that evening Walt presented
the same topic to the Adelaide Chapter of PMI. |

The 2nd version of the Statistical
Prediction Calculator is now available. The
version has a few improvements, to include a Word document
of instruction. Walt will present “Statistical
Methods Applied to Project Management” at the
upcoming IPMC conference. The presentation discusses
the application of the method to real project data.

At this time Kym Henderson is researching
the stability characteristic of the SPI(t) indicator.
The calculator used in Kym’s efforts may
also be used to study the stability of CPI. The

EVA-12, was held 11-14 June in London. Kym Henderson
(Australia) and Walt Lipke provided a one day Earned
Schedule master class on 11 June. |

Together, Walt and Kym made a joint
presentation, “Earned Schedule – something
new for EVM and schedule analysis,” to the PMI
organization in Brussels, Belgium on June 12. The
meeting, sponsored by Microsoft, drew 150 attendees.
Dr. Mario Vanhoucke from the University of Ghent,
Belgium presented the findings of his joint research
with Stephan Vandevoorde concerning Earned Value and
Earned Schedule (EV / ES). After the presentation,
Dr. Vanhoucke was presented a check for 5000 Euro
Dollars by the PMI-Belgium President, Chris Kindermans,
to continue the EV / ES research. The symbolic
check is shown in the photo below.

at the recent PMI-CPM spring conference held in Clearwater,
Florida. In presenting his topic, Mr. Corovic

The team of TCR Products and Altosoft
is launching a new project management product which
includes EVM along with Earned Schedule. The product
is named NOVUS. TCR and Altosoft have considerable experience
with developing software solutions allowing analysis
tools to work with enterprise management systems, such
as SAP. The product will be presented at a series
of events in Louisiana and Texas, scheduled for June

Kym Henderson has generalized a statistically
based calculator, originally created by Walt Lipke.
The output of the calculator is upper and lower “bounds”
for both final cost and duration along with their respective
“most likely” results. The Statistical Prediction
Calculator is now included on the Calculator page. It
is a beta version and thus it should be used with the
understanding that its results have not been fully tested.
Two examples are included in the .zip file to
help understand its output and to facilitate application.

the International Quality and Productivity Center IT
Project Management Conference held in Sydney, Australia.
The presentation discusses Earned Schedule and
the application of statistical methods to prediction
of project outcomes for both cost and schedule. |

Diego Navarro, a project management
leader in Spain, has advanced the application of Earned
Schedule with the creation of a software macro implementing
the concept for use with Microsoft Project (MSP).
Interested MSP users can read a description of the macro
at Diego’s blog, http://direccion-proyectos.blogspot.com/2007/04/performing-earned-schedule-analysis.html.
Kym Henderson uses MSP extensively and has worked
with Diego to check the application in English form.
The macro requires use before it can be considered reliable.

in Sydney, Australia at which several presentations
were made concerning Earned Schedule. Walt Lipke

Kym Henderson presented his paper, “Earned Schedule
in Action.” Together, Kym and Walt, gave
a one-half day ES master class to twenty students.

conference, EVA-12, has been announced and is scheduled
for 11-14 June in London. Kym and Walt will provide

Buck Stewart, past President of the Oklahoma City Chapter
of PMI, nominated Walt Lipke for the PMI Metrics Specific
Interest Group award, MetSIG Scholar for his creation
of Earned Schedule. Mr. Lipke was selected for
the award and will present “Earned Schedule …an
emerging enhancement to Earned Value Management”
as one of the 2007 MetSIG Congress series of webinars

is the Time Aspect in EVM?”) Copies of the

The first research from academia related
to forecasting project duration from the use of earned
value data has recently been published in the Journal
of Operational Research Society, September 2006.
The paper, “A Simulation and Evaluation
of Earned Value Metrics to Forecast Project Duration,”
compares past methods of using earned value data and
the newer methods, Earned Schedule and Earned Duration.
The research paper from Dr. Vanhoucke (University of
Ghent, Belgium) and Mr. Vandevoorde (Fabricom Airport
Systems) is made available on-line for a $10 charge

EVMS analysis product for Deltek has prepared an ES
add-on. He has made the ES add-on available to Cobra

Dr. Diego Navarro, a PM consultant in
Spain, has translated the ES calculators into Spanish.
He is working to popularize PM concepts, tools and techniques
across the Spanish speaking PM professionals.

Dr. Navarro identified a problem in
the ES v2 calculator. The problem has been corrected
and the v2a version is available for download with this

record month of activity. The number of requests
was only slightly larger than for July. However,
the amount of material downloaded had a fairly large
increase. Over the last 7 days of the month 25.8 MBytes
of data were downloaded daily. |

Mick Higgins of BMT Sigma Limited has
been added to the Contacts list. Mick is a consultant
to the Nimrod (maritime patrol aircraft) project.
The Nimrod is a major defense effort for the United
Kingdom. Mick has submitted a paper for publication
in the APM journal discussing the application of Earned
Schedule (ES) to the Nimrod project. He is planning
to present on this ES application at the upcoming International
Integrated Project Management Conference. |

The website had a record month of activity.
The requests increased from the previous record month
by 18 percent to 7712. The amount of downloaded
material for the month was astounding; it was a 54 percent
increase over the total from the February inception
of the website. On average for the month, 14.5
megabytes of data were downloaded daily. |

The Belgian team of Dr. Mario Vanhoucke
