“Earned Schedule – An Emerging Enhancement to EVM,” the paper published in the November 2006 issue of CrossTalk, has been posted on the PMI College of Scheduling website (http://www.pmicos.org/) as the December topic of the month.
Lew Hecht has been added as an ES Contact. Lew is an electronics engineer with extensive experience in many areas.  He is retired from the US Defense Contracts Management Agency.
Information regarding the Project Management Institute Eric Jenett Award for Project Management Excellence has been added to the site as a new link.  The prestigious award was presented to Walt Lipke at the International Integrated Program Management Conference held 5-7 November, 2007. Biographical information is available concerning Eric Jenett, one of the founders of PMI.  Information about the award – description, criteria, nomination and selection – is available along with the nomination letters from Garry Booker and Kym Henderson.
The activity level of the website reached a new peak in November at 17,515 requests and remained very high in December with 13,497 requests.

During the plenary session on 7 Nov, PMI’s Chief Operating Officer, Mark Langley, presented Walt Lipke with the Eric Jenett Project Management Excellence Award.  The award recognizes an individual who makes outstanding contributions to the project management profession through an act that demonstrates leadership and initiative while advancing project management concepts, techniques, practices or theories.  Only four others have received this highly prestigious award.
On the evening of 6 Nov, TCR hosted a reception for Mr. Lipke in the Capitol View Room of the Hilton Mark Center in Alexandria, Virginia to honor his accomplishment and receipt of the Eric Jenett award.  TCR has launched the marketing of a new real-time project management tool, NOVUS, which incorporates the Earned Schedule measure and capabilities.  The TCR hosts were Sue Gibson (president), Aaron Fulner, Karen Dougherty, and Herman DeJong. Among those in attendance were Walt’s daughters Tara Crowley and Jennifer McCarty.  Outstanding members of the project management and EVM community came and enjoyed the celebration: Dave Muzio, Jim Wrisley, Harry Sparrow, John Singley, Barry Schuler, Dr. Frank Anbari, Ray Stratton, Lew Hecht, Doug Fisher and Valerie Carter.  Likewise several international leaders of project management and EVM application were present: Kym Henderson (Australia), Lauren Bone (Australia), Sven Antvik (Sweden), Steve Wake (United Kingdom), and Josef Zucha (Slovakia).
Christopher Stimpson, a consultant with Catalyst, Inc., has completed an extensive paper, “A Review of the Validity of Current Project Management Reports and the Identification of Areas Needing Improvement.”  This impressive work along with its synopsis is available on the Papers page.
A calculator has been added to the es calculator page, “Statistical Planning Calculator (Probability & Reserves).”  The calculator utilizes estimates or historical variation from past projects to assist planning teams for strategizing the amounts of cost and schedule reserve needed to achieve a desired probability of success.
A link, Copyrights & Trademarks, has been added to clarify the usage and intention of copyrights and trademarks associated with the Earned Schedule website.
The activity level of the website reached a new peak in October.  The number of requests during the month was 15,715.
September - October 2007
Walt Lipke presented “Earned Schedule …an emerging enhancement to EVM,” on October 3 at the 2nd Knowledge and Project Management Conference held in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Robert Van De Velde, published an interesting article in the October issue of PMI World Today e Journal, “Time is Up: Assessing Schedule Performance with Earned Value.” The link to the article is http://www.pmforum.org/library/papers/2007/PDFs/Van_De_Velde-10-07.pdf.
Robert Van De Velde, the author referenced in the preceding news item, has a commercial Web Site (www.projectflightdeck.com) that features plug-ins for Microsoft Project.  He has developed a plug-in for Earned Schedule, which is freely available (http://www.projectflightdeck.com/getDoc.do?sid=55). July-August 2007
On July 13, at the monthly meeting of the Oklahoma City Chapter of PMI, Kym Henderson presented “Earned Schedule in Action.”  The presentation is based upon Mr. Henderson’s article, same title, published in the June 2005 issue of The Measurable News.  This presentation, which discusses Critical Path and Earned Schedule methods, has been accepted by the International Project Management Conference (IPMC) scheduled for 5-7 November in Alexandria, VA.
Together, Walt Lipke and Kym Henderson taught an all day course on Earned Schedule in Sydney, Australia on August 20.  The class was attended by 21 students, which included Ian Wolfe the Vice President of the Sydney Chapter of PMI.
Walt presented “Using Earned Schedule to Improve Project Control and Reduce Risk” on August 23 at the Australian Defence and Industry Conference held in Adelaide.  Later that evening Walt presented the same topic to the Adelaide Chapter of PMI.
The 2nd version of the Statistical Prediction Calculator is now available.  The version has a few improvements, to include a Word document of instruction. Walt will present “Statistical Methods Applied to Project Management” at the upcoming IPMC conference.  The presentation discusses the application of the method to real project data.
At this time Kym Henderson is researching the stability characteristic of the SPI(t) indicator.  The calculator used in Kym’s efforts may also be used to study the stability of CPI.  The Stability Point Calculator has been added to the calculator page and is available for download.
The PMI Metrics Specific Interest Group experienced a considerable amount of website downtime after the Earned Schedule webinar of 19 April.  The webinar is now available for viewing at a minimal cost of $5.00 at the following URL: http://www.metsig.org/products1.aspx?category=73&product=361.  Subsequent to the webinar several questions were forwarded to and answered by Walt.  The Q&A is available using the following link: 19 April 2007 ES Webinar.
The activity on the Earned Schedule website has continued to have high activity.  The number of requests during July and August were 12,318 and 12,836, respectively.
June 2007
The Earned Value Management conference, EVA-12, was held 11-14 June in London. Kym Henderson (Australia) and Walt Lipke provided a one day Earned Schedule master class on 11 June.

Together, Walt and Kym made a joint presentation, “Earned Schedule – something new for EVM and schedule analysis,” to the PMI organization in Brussels, Belgium on June 12.  The meeting, sponsored by Microsoft, drew 150 attendees. Dr. Mario Vanhoucke from the University of Ghent, Belgium presented the findings of his joint research with Stephan Vandevoorde concerning Earned Value and Earned Schedule (EV / ES).  After the presentation, Dr. Vanhoucke was presented a check for 5000 Euro Dollars by the PMI-Belgium President, Chris Kindermans, to continue the EV / ES research.  The symbolic check is shown in the photo below.

During the time in Brussels, Walt & Kym along with Dr. Vanhoucke and Stephan Vandevoorde had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Diego Navarro (Spain).  Recall that Dr. Navarro has created a macro for ES which works with Microsoft Project.
The activity on the Earned Schedule website has had another high activity month.  The number of requests during June was 13,506.
May 2007
Radenko Corovic presented “Planning, Optimizing and EVM – Integrated Approach” at the recent PMI-CPM spring conference held in Clearwater, Florida.   In presenting his topic, Mr. Corovic includes a discussion of ES and rationale for its preferential use.
The Earned Value Management conference, EVA-12, is scheduled for 11-14 June in London.   Kym Henderson and Walt Lipke will provide a one day Earned Schedule master class on the first day.

During the time in Belgium discussions will be held with Dr. Mario Vanhoucke of the University of Ghent.  Dr. Vanhoucke is conducting research concerning the ES concept of schedule adherence and its influence on project forecasts for cost and schedule.  Also during the time in Brussels, Walt & Kym will have opportunity to meet with Diego Navarro.   Last month it was reported that Mr. Navarro has created a macro for ES which works with Microsoft Project.
The team of TCR Products and Altosoft is launching a new project management product which includes EVM along with Earned Schedule.  The product is named NOVUS. Kym Henderson has generalized a statistically based calculator, originally created by Walt Lipke. The output of the calculator is upper and lower “bounds” for both final cost and duration along with their respective “most likely” results. The Statistical Prediction Calculator is now included on the Calculator page.  It is a beta version and thus it should be used with the understanding that its results have not been fully tested.  Two examples are included in the .zip file to help understand its output and to facilitate application.
The activity on the Earned Schedule website has had another significant increase.  The number of requests during May was 14,889.
April 2007
Kym Henderson presented “Recent Advances in Project Prediction Techniques,” at the International Quality and Productivity Center IT Project Management Conference held in Sydney, Australia.  The presentation discusses Earned Schedule and the application of statistical methods to prediction of project outcomes for both cost and schedule.
Diego Navarro, a project management leader in Spain, has advanced the application of Earned Schedule with the creation of a software macro implementing the concept for use with Microsoft Project (MSP).  Interested MSP users can read a description of the macro at Diego’s blog, http://direccion-proyectos.blogspot.com/2007/04/performing-earned-schedule-analysis.html.  Kym Henderson uses MSP extensively and has worked with Diego to check the application in English form.  The macro requires use before it can be considered reliable. Walt Lipke presented “Earned Schedule …an emerging enhancement to Earned Value Management” as one of the 2007 MetSIG Congress series of webinars.  The PMI-MetSIG has archived the presentation and will make it available from their website, http://www.met-sig.org/index.aspx beginning in May.
An Earned Value Management (EVM) training course has been prepared for the Project Management Training Institute by Walt Lipke, which will be offered on-line (http://www.4pmti.com/) in the near future.  The course includes training on Earned Schedule (ES) and provides students the capability to use the information coming from EVM and ES to manage projects and improve their planning, production and quality processes.
The activity on the Earned Schedule website continues at a high level.  The number of requests during April was 12,672.
March 2007
Learning Network Solutions held a conference in Sydney, Australia at which several presentations were made concerning Earned Schedule.  Walt Lipke presented the keynote, “Achieving Risk Leadership with Improved Schedule Analysis and Prediction Techniques.”  Kym Henderson presented his paper, “Earned Schedule in Action.”  Together, Kym and Walt, gave a one-half day ES master class to twenty students.  The conference organizers indicated there were requests for a one day ES class which will be organized for Sydney later in the year
The Steve Wake Earned Value Management conference, EVA-12, has been announced and is scheduled for 11-14 June in London.  Kym and Walt will provide a one day Earned Schedule master class on the first day.

The activity on the Earned Schedule website continues to increase.  The number of requests during March was 13,056, a new record for website activity by nearly 2000.  The phenomenal growth in Earned Schedule interest is depicted in the graph below.



Last month it was reported that Mr. Buck Stewart, past President of the Oklahoma City Chapter of PMI, nominated Walt Lipke for the PMI Metrics Specific Interest Group award, MetSIG Scholar for his creation of Earned Schedule.  Mr. Lipke was selected for the award and will present “Earned Schedule …an emerging enhancement to Earned Value Management” as one of the 2007 MetSIG Congress series of webinars on April 19 at 1:00 pm EST.  To register for the webinar access www.metsig.org, then on the left side of the page under "Knowledge that Measures," click MetSIG Congress 2007 Ticket Sales.  On the ticket sales page scroll to the bottom and click on page 3 below the listing of the webinars.  The first webinar on page 3 is Mr. Lipke’s.  From this point simply click on the title and follow the directions to complete the registration.  The cost of the webinar is $5.00 (USA).
February 2007
Kym Henderson, the Education Director of the Sydney, Australia Chapter of PMI, presented his paper at the PMI Global Congress Asia Pacific 2007 held in Hong Kong 29-31 January.  Mr. Henderson’s presentation, “Earned Schedule: A Breakthrough Extension to Earned Value Management,” was well attended and well received.
It has been reported that Earned Schedule has been included in project management courses at George Washington University and in systems engineering courses at the University of Florida.

It is noted that Earned Schedule (ES) has further spread internationally.  The author cited above, Radenko Corovic is Canadian.  Another new ES user is Stephane Quenson, a French citizen working for an American company in Belgrade, Serbia.
The Earned Schedule website has now been active for one year as of the beginning of February.  Its activity remained high during January and February.  The number of requests during January was 11,117, a new record for website activity.

Mick Higgins a consultant in the United Kingdom for BMT Sigma presented his recent paper, “Can You Tell the Time” at the 2006 International Integrated Program Management Conference held in Alexandria, VA.  The presentation discussed the application of ES to a UK major defense project, Nimrod, a maritime patrol aircraft.

October 2006
The Belgian research team of Stephan Vandevoorde and Dr. Mario Vanhoucke recently published a Dutch language paper in V.M.A Management Jaarboek 2006, Belgium.  The title of the paper is “Waar Zit Het Tijdsaspect in een Earned Value Management System?” (“Where is the Time Aspect in EVM?”)  Copies of the article can be obtained from Dr. Vanhoucke by emailing him at Mario.vanhoucke@Ugent.be.
The first research from academia related to forecasting project duration from the use of earned value data has recently been published in the Journal of Operational Research Society, September 2006.  The paper, “A Simulation and Evaluation of Earned Value Metrics to Forecast Project Duration,” compares past methods of using earned value data and the newer methods, Earned Schedule and Earned Duration.  The research paper from Dr. Vanhoucke (University of Ghent, Belgium) and Mr. Vandevoorde (Fabricom Airport Systems) is made available on-line for a $10 charge at www.palgrave-journals.com.

Robert Handshuh of Lockheed Martin presented “Earned Schedule - New analysis of schedule in Earned Value Management” at the Air Force Aeronautical Systems Center Cost/Schedule Workshop held 19-20 September in Bethesda, MD.
Mick Higgins, a consultant of BMT Sigma Limited, has published an article, “Can You Tell the Time?,” in the August/September issue of the APM journal.  The article discusses the application of ES to the UK defense project, Nimrod.
Walt Lipke & Kym Henderson taught a full day class on ES at the host site for the PROMAC conference, Sydney Australia.
Walt Lipke made several presentations concerning ES while in Australia. At the PROMAC conference he presented, “Earned Schedule Leads to Improved Forecasting.”  Following the conference, Walt traveled to Canberra where he presented, separately, an introduction to ES to the Australian Defence Materiel Organisation and the PMI-Canberra Chapter.
Mike Boulton, a developer of the Cobra EVMS analysis product for Deltek has prepared an ES add-on. He has made the ES add-on available to Cobra users at no charge.  All that is required is registration.  Details may be obtained from Mr. Boulton [email: mboulton@wstpacific.com.au, phone: +61 8 8150 5500].
The activity on the website increased to its highest level.  The number of requests for the month was 10095, a significant increase of 30 percent above the previous monthly high.
August 2006
Dr. Diego Navarro, a PM consultant in Spain, has translated the ES calculators into Spanish.  He is working to popularize PM concepts, tools and techniques across the Spanish speaking PM professionals.  Dr. Navarro has written a series of posts for a weblog promoting EVM and ES, http://direccion-proyectos.blogspot.com/.
Dr. Navarro identified a problem in the ES v2 calculator.  The problem has been corrected and the v2a version is available for download with this month’s updates.
The website had a second consecutive record month of activity.  The number of requests was only slightly larger than for July.  However, the amount of material downloaded had a fairly large increase. Over the last 7 days of the month 25.8 MBytes of data were downloaded daily.
July 2006
Mick Higgins of BMT Sigma Limited has been added to the Contacts list.  Mick is a consultant to the Nimrod (maritime patrol aircraft) project.  The Nimrod is a major defense effort for the United Kingdom.  Mick has submitted a paper for publication in the APM journal discussing the application of Earned Schedule (ES) to the Nimrod project.  He is planning to present on this ES application at the upcoming International Integrated Project Management Conference.
The website had a record month of activity.  The requests increased from the previous record month by 18 percent to 7712.  The amount of downloaded material for the month was astounding; it was a 54 percent increase over the total from the February inception of the website.  On average for the month, 14.5 megabytes of data were downloaded daily.
The Belgian team of Dr. Mario Vanhoucke and Stephan Vandevoorde has had another paper involving Earned Schedule accepted for publication.  The paper is titled “A Simulation and Evaluation of Earned Value Metrics to Forecast the Project Duration” and is to be published in the Journal of Operations Research Society.

The P-Factor calculator was completed and is available for downloading. The research team of Vandevoorde and Vanhoucke are beginning to test the application of the P-Factor.
The activity of the website was at it highest since its February inception. The number of requests in June was 6165. Seven to eight megabytes of data are being downloaded daily.
